5 Things You Need to Consider When Choosing an LTL Company

When you need LTL freight services, how do you pick the right provider? Here are 5 considerations to think about when choosing an LTL company.

Choosing An LTL Company

There are almost 800,000 for-hire carriers registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Many of these carriers offer less than truckload services.

So how do you go about choosing the right LTL company for your needs with this overwhelming number of options?

We have four critical things you should look for when choosing the right carrier to deliver your shipments.

1. Insurance

You need to make sure that your shipment is safe while in transit. Sometimes things go wrong, and a load is lost or destroyed. It is vital that the carrier you choose has insurance so you can recoup your loss.

Most LTL carriers will have liability insurance of $10 per pound. Be careful though; some have rates as low as $1 per pound.

You have every right to ask the carrier what insurance they carry and for proof of claimed insurance. If the carrier refuses to provide this information, this is a red flag, and you need to look elsewhere for your shipment needs.

2. Additional Fees

Sometimes the lowest quoted rate is not the cheapest rate after the additional fees are tacked on. You might hear these referred to as accessorial charges.

  • Liftgate required
  • Redelivery
  • Layover
  • Reclassification and/or reweigh
  • Advance notice
  • Limited access
  • Residential
  • Inside delivery
  • Fuel surcharge
  • Oversized
  • Hazardous materials
  • After hour delivery
  • Storage
  • Additional stops
  • Truck ordered and not used

This is not a complete list but does cover the most common accessorial charges. As you can see, the cost of your shipment can quickly escalate if you are not careful.

3. Service Performance

Before you trust your shipment with a particular carrier, look up their performance history. All you need is the carrier’s USDOT or MC/MX number.

You will then be able to see the carrier’s safety record and rating, crash information, and inspection performance. This information will help you determine how safe your shipment will be on the carrier’s trucks.

4. Geographic Coverage

When you need to book LTL services, you need to make sure the carrier services the pickup and delivery area. Some carriers will cover the entire country. While others will only cover a particular region or even just a handle of states.

Some carriers will turn down your shipment if it is out of the service area. Others will accept your shipment, but then charge you an inflated rate to cover the out of service area.

5. Customer Service

This point has less to do with the actual shipment and more with how the carrier will treat you. Today’s trucking industry has more loads than there are trucks available.

Because of this, some carriers forget that the customer is key to their business’ success. This results in you, the customer, having a less than pleasant shipping experience.

Look for a carrier that has a strong history of positive customer interaction. Your carrier should communicate with you and return your phone calls or emails.
